THE UNIVERSITY AWARD

Each year an ALEA prize, of a year's membership to the Association, is awarded to outstanding teacher education students in the final, core English Language and Literacy subject in their course. The students eligible to enter, come from pre-service teacher education courses and from collaborating universities. Local Councils may also choose to present an award to a post-graduate student. Generally, one award is offered for each university and for each campus with teacher education courses. These factors need to be discussed within each state so that local council needs and university partnerships can be taken into account.
Generally the following process needs to be followed:

1. The Local Council should assume responsibility for the University Award process.

2. The State Director needs to keep a list of the award recipients to ensure there is special follow-up, for example invitations to events, renewal of membership.

3. The Local Council needs to elect an awards committee to manage the selection process.

4. ALEA's Local Councils in each state should nominate which university/campus they will take responsibility for and send a letter to that University's Faculty of Education inviting them to select a contact person for their site.

5. ALEA's Local Council should negotiate with the university contact person the following conditions for awarding the prize. That the university advertises the details of the award by distributing a flier to all students enrolled in the final, core, English Language and Literacy subject of their course. This flier should be accessible to all students enrolled in this subject, for example, as an inclusion in the subject booklet.
The flier should include ALEA’s logo and information about:

The Award
What it is, why it is offered

Eligibility
The award will be offered to the student who receives the top mark/grade in the final, core English Language and Literacy subject in their teacher education course. This includes the top student in each university in the state and on each campus.

The selection process
Once results have been completed, university staff should inform the Local Council of the successful student recipient for the award.

Other points to discuss with the university contact person:
The university decides on an appropriate occasion for presenting the award and that the State Director or a representative from the Local Council of ALEA be invited to the occasion.
The university records the details of the winners of the award.
The university displays a poster, which provides information about ALEA and ALEA activities.

6. ALEA's local council writes to the successful recipient of the award and to those not successful, acknowledging their efforts.

7. ALEA's local council informs National Office of the award winner and sends application form for membership and fee for one year's subscription. The Local Council must also inform the editor of ALEA Today so that it can be included in the newsletter.

8. A generic certificate, with a seal with the award winner's name, course and the Local Council name will be presented to the recipient.
