STELLA Standards

The standards are available on the
STELLA web site www.stella.org.auThe Standards for Teachers of English Language and Literacy in Australia (STELLA) were developed from a collaboration between the Australian Literacy Educators' Association (ALEA) and the Australian Association for the Teaching of English (AATE). A three-year research project was led by a development team of researchers from Monash University, Edith Cowan University and the Queensland University of Technology. This team worked with a large number of practising teachers to develop subject specific standards for the profession.

The interlinked set of STELLA materials includes standards statements, STELLA Narratives, and keywords and questions linked to specific standards. The standards incorporate all language modes of listening, speaking, writing, reading and viewing, and highlight the knowledge and understanding of accomplished teachers of English and literacy in relation to these modes. These are available on the web site www.stella.org.au

In 2005 some ALEA members took part in the ALEA STELLA professional learning project. They were given an opportunity to work with a mentor to explore the standards, to develop their own professional standards, to develop their own professional learning, and to share their stories with other professionals.

Their stories were published in 2006 in the ALEA publication Teachers' Stories: professional standards, professional learning.

(ISBN 0977546802)
