Every year ALEA Victoria presents the ALEA University Award for the highest graduating students in Literacy Studies at participating Victorian universities. The winner of the award is to be nominated by the particular university’s Faculty of Education.
To be eligible, the student must be graduating with a primary education degree and have achieved the highest aggregate marks in literacy education subjects. Each university determines the specific details of what this means as the various teacher education courses are structured in different ways.
In making this award available ALEA aims to recognise excellence and increase public awareness of the vital importance of well educated, dedicated teachers as the lynch pin in effective literacy education. Recipients of the award are presented with a certificate acknowledging the achievement, a package of back editions ALEA journals and an annual membership to ALEA.In 2003 nine ALEA University awards were presented at universities in Melbourne and regional Victoria which offer teacher education courses. The awards were made at university ceremonies usually around graduation time or at separate functions.
